Bobby O'Connell is a longstanding figure in local politics in Kerry County, representing the Castleisland area. He has been involved in politics since 1985 and has been a member of the Kerry County Council since 1991. His career in public service includes various significant roles:

Council and Committee Memberships: O'Connell has served on the Kerry County Council continuously since 1991. He has also been a member of the Southern Health Board from 1991 to 2004 and the Kerry Educational Service (KES) from 2004 to 2009. Additionally, he held the position of Chairperson for the Transport Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) and the Environmental & Water Services SPC during the same period.
Mayoral Roles: O'Connell has served as the Mayor of Kerry (2009-2010) and the Mayor of the Killarney Municipal Area (2015-2016).
Current Involvements: He is currently a member of several committees and bodies, including the HSE Forum, South West Regional Authority, Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly, and the Joint Policing Committee. He also holds the position of Fine Gael Whip on Kerry County Council and is a member of the Community Culture and Tourism SPC. His role as General Secretary of the Local Authorities Members Association (LAMA) highlights his extensive involvement in local governance.
Electoral History: O'Connell has been elected in four different electoral areas and two constituencies: Mid Kerry, Dingle Area in 1991; Tralee Area in 1999 and 2004; Killarney Area in 2009 and 2014; and Castle island in 2019.
